Understanding the Different NSK Air Polishing Powders
FLASH pearl
FLASH pearl is NSK's sodium bicarbonate powder and is designed for rapid removal of stubborn staining.

Best suited for:
Heavy tobacco staining Coffee and tea stains
Patients requiring intensive supragingival cleaning

With an average particle size of approximately 54 μm, FLASH pearl delivers strong cleaning while maintaining smooth powder flow through the Prophy Mate neo.
SOFT pearl
NSK developed SOFT pearl with a modified glycine formulation that is designed to flow more consistently and reduce moisture related clogging compared to many traditional bicarbonate powders. Clinically, users often find it easier to work with because it tends to remain free-flowing in the chamber and tubing.

Best suited for:
Mild to moderate staining
Routine hygiene appointments
Patients seeking a gentler treatment experience
Cleaning around restorative materials

The glycine based formulation offers a more comfortable experience than traditional
powders while still effectively removing plaque and surface stains. Average particle size is approximately 65 μm.

Perio Mate Powder
Perio Mate Powder is specifically formulated for periodontal and implant maintenance.
Best suited for:
pockets
Peri-implant maintenance
Biofilm removal
Exposed root surfaces
Patients undergoing supportive periodontal therapy

The powder consists of ultra fine glycine particles averaging just 25 μm. Its low abrasiveness and high water solubility help minimise tissue trauma while effectively disrupting subgingival biofilm. NSK notes that the powder is softer than dentine
and suitable for both supra and subgingival
applications.

The Prophy Mate neo is designed primarily for supragingival air polishing and stain removal, while the Perio Mate system is specifically engineered for safe subgingival biofilm removal using Perio Mate Powder and dedicated periodontal nozzle tips. Perio Mate Powder can also be used supragingivally, making it a versatile option for comprehensive biofilm management.
Matching the Powder to the Treatment Surface

The Future of Powder Therapy
As preventive dentistry continues to evolve, air polishing is increasingly being used as a minimally invasive alternative to traditional polishing methods. Selecting the appropriate powder allows clinicians to tailor treatment to each patient's needs while improving comfort, efficiency and clinical outcomes.
