Biofilm Testing

What is a biofilm test?

The HPC Sampler is a biofilm test that has been procured specifically to draw precise and relevant results

on microbial counts. The test strip is coated in a bacterial food source derived from red algae called agar,

this allows colonies to form and grow on the slide. An air filter on the strip allows exactly 1ml of water to

draw into the nutrient pad resulting in precise quantitative results. Each colony counted on the test strip

will account for 1 CFU/ml and can read up to 300 CFU/ml in which anything beyond is an off-scale fail. The

Australian Dental Association recommends that water used in nonsurgical procedures measure less than or

equal to 200 CFU/ml and thus the HPC Sampler Test is most suitable for testing dental unit waterlines.

What can I do if my chair has failed?

At Leading Dental, we offer a range of products by ALPRO designed to control microbial bacteria in your

dental unit waterlines. Said products are all simple mixtures that can be dosed into your dental unit

waterlines through the bottle input on the chair. After a poor test reading, a Bilpron Starter Kit is essential. The Bilpron Starter Kit is an initial shock treatment designed to flush biofilm formations from your dental unit waterlines. Following this starter treatment, you are ready to implement a control system to prevent further biofilm growth. Alpron should be dosed into all procedural water used in the chair, it is a physiologically harmless liquid concentrate that actively decontaminates waterlines applied to. Bilpron is a stronger more aggressive formula which should be used once a week when the chair is not being used, either overnight or ideally over the weekend, the longer the better. Following the use of Bilpron the chair should be flushed with a full bottle cycle of Alpron dosed water. All mentioned products can be purchased at store.leadingdental.com.au and sent to your practise with comprehensive instructions or, to start you off, conducted by one of our friendly technicians who will be on site to demonstrate and guide you. Through the Leading Dental store and resource portal you can reach all the products and support needed to implement an effective and efficient biofilm management system personalised to fit your practices operations.

Bilpron is a ready to use liquid disinfectant that detaches and breaks down organisms inside the waterlines of your chair. Bilpron use is recommended weekly or bi-weekly as it is important to give the dental unit waterlines a shock treatment to decrease the chances of build-up of biofilm.

What if I don't have a bottle on my chair?

For Belmont dental chairs that currently don't have a bottle, our service technicians are able to install one in swift time and with some flexibility based on your equipment and needs. Contact us at leadingdental.com.au or (07) 3139 1549 for more information.

Bilpron / Alpron Use

Alpron – Daily

Alpron is a liquid concentrate made for the continuous maintenance of the water quality in procedural

water lines. Alpron is physiologically harmless and safe for procedural use. We would recommend use

of Alpron in all water that runs through the chair to decrease the chance of biofilm formation in your

waterlines.

Use throughout the day

The Alpron dosing is 10ml to 990ml, so roughly 1%. At the start of your day fill your procedural bottle

with the appropriate dosage and use bottle contents throughout patients until empty and repeat.

Overnight

Alpron dosed procedural water is safe to leave in the bottle overnight as it is an active biocide that will

prevent Biofilm from growing. However, it is recommended to at least a couple times a week, empty the

contents of the bottle and leave it to dry in a suitable place.

Bilpron – Weekly / bi-weekly

Bilpron is a ready to use liquid disinfectant that detaches and breaks down organisms inside the waterlines of your chair. Bilpron use is recommended weekly or bi-weekly as it is important to give the dental unit waterlines a shock treatment to decrease the chances of build-up of biofilm.

When to apply

The best time to use Bilpron is on a Friday afternoon as Bilpron requires a minimum of 12 hours in the

unit waterlines to be effective and the longer you leave it, the better.

How to apply

Bilpron concentrate is not diluted when put into the chair, it only requires approximately 100ml in your

bottle to flush through each handpiece and triplex line. Ensure that as soon as the blue indication of

Bilpron comes out of the handpiece line you switch to the next line immediately to minimise wastage.

Once the Bilpron has visibly been through each handpiece line you can switch the chair and bottle off.

Remove the bottle, tip out remaining Bilpron from inside the bottle and leave to air dry over the period of

the Bilpron flush. This prevents biofilm-growth on parts of the bottle and straw that aren’t in direct contact

with Bilpron by allowing them to be air purged. Returning to the chair after the shock treatment, fill the

bottle with water and flush the chair for 3-5 minutes.
